McCain Jumps Ahead of Obama in Latest Poll

John McCain bested Barack Obama 50-46 percent among registered voters in the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, jumping 11 points over his previous showing and taking his biggest lead since January. This new lead in the polls has to be credited to a well-received Republican Convention last week fueled largely by the surprise pick of McCain's vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. The numbers out Monday show McCain wiped out a 7-point lead Obama received after the Democratic Convention two weeks ago.

Were there other factors at work here beside the Palin pick. Were you surprised there was such a dramatic shift oin just one week - I sure was.

I was surprised there was such a shift in just one week. I think the thing that helped the Republicans was the fact that their convention was last. People had a last impression of what they saw at the RNC and may have forgot some of what they saw at the DNC.

Poll numbers are bouncing all around . . . and there is greater variation between polls than I remember from past elections. You can get the lastest information on all the major polls at the Real Clear Politics site - http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/latestpolls/index.html
